Motivation

The topics of climate change and the energy transition are omnipresent - meeting these challenges is one of the key tasks for the future.

„We think in generations, not quarters. Sustainability means that we always act in harmony with economy, ecology and social responsibility.“
∼ Dr. Kurt Schmalz, Managing Shareholder of J. Schmalz GmbH

We have been acting sustainably since the company was founded in 1910. We already cover the majority of our energy needs with our own PV systems, hydropower and wind power, and a wood chip heating system. Our goal: As a positive energy company, we want to generate more energy from our own renewable sources than we consume within the company. To achieve this, we use materials efficiently and avoid CO2 emissions. By joining the Baden-Württemberg Climate Alliance, Schmalz is committed to the goal of climate neutrality via Scope 1 to 3 by the year 2040.

Sustainability also plays a central role in our products: The carbon footprint of a Schmalz product is significantly smaller than that of comparable products on the market - so we also help our customers to improve their eco-balance..

In order to master the energy transition, new storage solutions for electricity and heat are needed. To meet this need, Schmalz has added a third area - energy storage systems - to its Vacuum Automation and Handling divisions.

Based on our decades of expertise in vacuum handling - including the handling of battery components - we are taking advantage of the synergies in the development and production of stacks as electrochemical converter units for stationary battery storage: redox flow batteries are particularly suitable for storing electricity from renewable energy sources. For Schmalz, this is the next, consistent step on the way to contributing to climate protection and the energy transition.
